As part of a national winter works open day campaign British Waterways is offering the public the chance to get a behind the scenes to take a look at the works at taking place at Crofton.

The Kennet And Avon Canal will be hosting an open day at Crofton Locks on Saturday 10th December when you can go along and meet the British Waterways team working on locks.

Members of the team will guide visitors around the lock explaining the work they are doing there.

The Crofton Pumping Station will also be open and The Kennet And Avon Canal Trust’s volunteers, who run the station, will be on hand to show visitors round this heritage site.

If you want to enjoy the Kennet and Avon and navigate the newly restored Crofton Locks then book a Canal Boat Holiday from our Hilperton Marina.

Anther wonderful feature you can experience on your Canal Boat Holiday on the Kennet And Avon Canal is the Caen Hill Locks .

This is a flight of 16 locks and thought to be the most impressive anywhere on the UK's waterways.

They were engineer John Rennie's solution to climbing the very steep hill near to Devizes.

The Kennet and Avon also boasts two magnificent aqueducts the Dundas and the Avoncliff.

The Dundas was completed in 1805 and was named after Charles Dundas, the first Chairman of The Kennet And Avon Canal Company.

It is a grade I listed building and in 1951 it was the first canal structure to be designated as an Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Designed by John Rennie The Avoncliff Aqueduct has three arches, is 110 yards long and carries the canal across the River Avon.

Lookout for the marks of the stone masons who worked on the aqueduct more than 200 years go as these can be clearly seen carved in the stone.
