15-09-2011 : THE KENNET AND AVON CANAL

Linking the River Thames at Reading to the Bristol Avon The Kennet And Avon Canal is one of the UKs most southerly canals and is fast becoming one of Britains favourite waterways.

Book a Canal Boat Holiday from Hilperton or Aldermaston to explore this beautiful waterway and to discover some of the most wonderful feats of canal engineering.

The Bruce Tunnel is the only tunnel on the Kennet and Avon and named after Thomas Brudenell Bruce.

When the canal was being built he would not allow a deep cutting through his land and insisted on a tunnel being constructed instead.

On your Canal Boat Holiday feel a real sense of achievement as you and your crew navigate your way through the Caen Hill Locks.

This flight of 16 locks is thought to be the most impressive anywhere on UK waterways.

They were canal engineer John Rennies solution to climbing the very steep hill near to Devizes.

The Caen Hill Locks are part of a longer 29 lock flight all packed into just over two miles.

Visit the Kennet And Avon Canal where the exhibits tell the story of the waterways from construction to the present day.

Two impressive aqueducts found on the Kennet And Avon Canal are the Avoncliff Aqueduct and the Dundas Aqueduct.
