Claverton Pumping Station on the Kennet And Avon Canal near Bath, which opened as part of the crucial waterway route between London and Bristol, celebrates its 200th anniversary this week.

The pumping station was designed by one of the innovators of the Industrial Revolution, engineer John Rennie to supply water to the Kennet And Avon Canal.

The building is owned by the Canal and River Trust and is managed by volunteers from the Kennet And Avon Canal Trust.

The principal method of supplying water for canals relied on drawing it from streams or rivers, but where a natural supply was unavailable an alternative method was needed.

To solve this problem on the Kennet And Avon Canal, John Rennie built two pumping stations to supply water from sources at lower levels.

At Crofton, near Hungerford, he used a coal fired steam engine to pump water from Wilton reservoir, at Claverton he use a large water wheel on the site of a former grist mill to pump water from the mill pond supplied from the River Avon.

Claverton Pumping Station was recently honoured with a Red Wheel award from the Transport Trust.

The Red Wheel programme is the transport equivalent of the English Heritages blue plaque scheme and recognises the Uks greatest transport heritage sites.

You can view the Claverton Punping Station on a Canal Boat Holiday booked from Hiperton or Aldermaston Marinas on the Kennet And Avon Canal.
