Wiltshire canal boat holidays

If you have booked your Canal Boat Holiday from Hilperton pay a visit to Bradford on Avon on the Kennet And Avon Canal.

Based around a river ford, the town is close to the canal and has numerous pubs and tearooms for refreshments en route.

During September take a tour of Dyrham Park, an ancient deer park with 200 fallow deer in their natural surroundings.

The town has many fine examples of architecture from the Saxon, Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Industrial Revolution periods.

Also to the north of the town, there was an Iron Age Fort and, recently discovered, a very important Roman villa.

The name of the town originates from the broad ford across the River Avon and the bridge is a natural focus for the town.

The towpath is home to a large numbers of wildfowl that make their home along the canal.

Among the birds that can be found are swans, Canadian geese, moorhens, coots, herons and mallards.

The Kennet And Avon Canal which was opened in 1810 runs from Reading to Bristol and one of the deepest locks on the canal is at Bradford on Avon.

A magnificent feature on the Kennet And Avon Canal is the Avoncliff Aqueduct which carries the canal over the River Avon.
